If you're looking for stats, definitely melee, though mage does help squeeze out that little bit extra damage if you're willing to dodge. If you want a consistently mid-tier class go ranger, it isn't as strong as the other two but it doesn't have too many major power spikes or dips, and a lot of calamity ammo types are really fun (specifically hyperius bullets)

I don't think there is a true "strongest class" unlike Vanilla, Calamity gave egregiously OP weapons to all classes and not just two of them.
